THE
SACRED POWER OF HUNA: SPIRITUALITY AND SHAMANISM IN HAWAII
Inner
Traditions USA 2005
'The
most significant breakthrough in lay thinking since Zukav's "Dancing
Wu Li Masters' Pila of Hawaii - author of Secrets
and Mysteries of Hawaii

When
Rima Morrell first went to Hawaii as young anthropology student
from Cambridge University, she was surprised to find a lighter,
brighter world where everything seemed to have a meaning. She found
Huna, the ancient system of Hawaii that holds codes to take the
world back to Paradise.
Huna
goes beyond the psychological systems of Freud and Jung in its understanding
of the mind, which Dr. Morrell - with the world's only Ph.D. on
Huna - explores. The Huna codes are held within the kaona,
'hidden meanings' of the Hawaiian language, which acts as a sacred
code. Through it Dr. Morrell explores the symbolism of place-names
and pilgrimage, and shows the way the hula dance of Hawaii is acts
as a sacred exploration through the kaona of the words
and actions of the dance, the subject of her original dissertation
at Cambridge University. She indicates the complexity of Hawaiian
myths, and how they can be understood through the system of Huna.
Moreover her chapters on making love and the role of colour lend
light to this ancient teaching - and help us create a lighter, brighter
world in turn. For Huna is a knowledge of great power and relevance
to the world today.

'Dr.
Morrell's Huna contribution brings us another missing piece to our
puzzle, not in what to think, but how'.
Pila
of Hawai'i - author of Secrets and Mysteries of Hawai'i
'Dr.
Morrell is uniquely able to bring academic rigour and a wide knowledge
of her subject to bear, yet her book is much more than dry scientific
reportage of anthropological data. Her exposition of the incredibly
subtle Hawaiian language, with its multiple layers of interwoven
meaning is a revelation. But it's when she leaves the work of other
authors behind and describes her own direct experiences with the
people and culture of Hawai'i that her book really flowers. Surely
this is the acme of anthropology: to take the experiences and lessons
of research directly back to the people, so we can begin to remember
the brightness that illuminates our lives'.
Dr.
Donnie Ross, MB., ChB., FRCA. Medical Director of Acute
Health in Aberdeen, 1996. Director of Health Informatics for NHS
Grampian, 2001.
'I
love this book! The book follows on from the writings of Max Freedom
Long, the authority on the secret science of Huna, but his words
are dry and lack the sparkle of this authoress. Her pages are tumbling
with the joy of new-found knowledge and she is able to communicate
her own sense of wonder and excitement successfully to the reader
... Huna is ultimately about energy and harmony - harmony of the
subconscious, conscious and superconscious. But also, as depicted
by Rima, it is about beauty and about love and about the wonders
of the natural world. She constantly draws metaphors between the
landscape descriptions and the terrain within our hearts and minds.
Self and others can all benefit from the guidance of Huna, if only
we knew more! Rima's delightful book will fulfil a vital role in
introducing many people to what she describes as the "bejewlled
path" to knowledge through Huna'.

without Wings
'There's
much here that rings true to me as a Polynesian, and I am most impressed
by her knowledge of a culture not her own. Rima is obviously blessed
with a keen intellect and extraordinary insights'.
Dr.
Vili Hereniko, Professor at the Centre for Pacific Islands
Studies, University of Hawai'i, Honolulu
'My
name if Melvin Lonokaiolohia Kalahiki. Let me introduce myself first.
I am President of the Council of Hawaiian Organisations ,
founding member of the PKO, and PapaAli'i of Pu'ukolulu
Heiau. I am the organizer of the Dawn of the New Century and New
Millennium Celebrations , with rituals and ceremonies to unite all
the people in the Polynesian Triangle and President of the Hawaiian
Lineage Institute . I am the originator and organizer of the
200 year anniversary of the battle of Nu'uanu in honor of King Kamehameha
in 1995 and the 1993 Oni Pa'a. The Sacred Power of Huna
by Rima Morrell would be a wonderful addition to books about Hawai'i,
written by a person who came to our shores, full of love for our
culture. She took much time on her own, penniless, going from island
to island and feeling the 'aina . And in return the spirits
of our land have filled her with knowledge of our rich past'.
